The hospital's Guangdong Cardiovascular Institute has been China's only WHO Collaborating Centre for cardiovascular disease research and training since 1980, and is regarded as one of the country's three major cardiovascular treatment centers. The hospital holds heart, lung, liver and kidney transplant qualifications, with heart-transplant volume among China's top three for four consecutive years and standing among the world's top-10 heart-transplant centers. Its Lung Cancer Institute and Geriatric Medicine department (anchoring South China's largest senior/cadre health-care base) are also nationally recognized.
For international patients, the hospital's VIP ward ('协和病区') is recognized for direct billing by 30+ overseas insurance companies, and the hospital was Guangdong's designated facility for treating foreign SARS patients in 2003 and later for foreign avian-flu/H1N1 patients. In 2026 it was named one of Guangdong's first batch of international medical service pilot hospitals.
